You Don't Need to Eat "Foreign" Food to Get Fit
One of the biggest barriers to fitness for Nigerians is the belief that you have to eat salad and boiled chicken to get results.
You don't.
Nigerian food is actually very compatible with fitness goals β you just need to make smarter choices within it.
Protein-Rich Nigerian Foods
Protein is essential for building muscle and keeping you full. These Nigerian staples are excellent protein sources:
Managing Carbohydrates
Eba, fufu, pounded yam, rice, and semo are all high-carbohydrate foods. They're not bad β you just need to manage portions based on your activity level.
If you train hard: You can eat more carbs β your muscles need the glycogen.
If you're sedentary: Reduce portions significantly or swap to unripe plantain (lower GI) and brown rice.
Vegetables β The Missing Ingredient
Most Nigerian meals already come with vegetables β okra, uziza, waterleaf, scent leaf, tomatoes. The problem is the vegetables are usually overwhelmed by palm oil and seasoning.
Increase your vegetable portions and reduce your swallow portion. This simple swap reduces calories significantly.
Sample Day of Eating for a Training Nigerian
This is a real Nigerian diet. It's not imported. And it works.
Hydration
Replace soft drinks and malt with water. A bottle of Coke has 200+ calories of pure sugar. That's one hour of walking burned in 5 minutes of drinking.
